  1. 1

What does the word jihad mean?

    Model answer

Jihad means struggle or striving, from a root meaning to exert effort. The word does not mean holy war, a phrase with no exact Arabic equivalent.

  2. 2

    What is the greater jihad?

    Model answer

The greater jihad is the personal struggle against one's own ego, temptation and sin. Muslims describe it as the lifelong effort to submit fully to God.

  3. 3

    What is the lesser jihad?

    Model answer

The lesser jihad is armed struggle in defence of the Muslim community or against oppression. Strict conditions govern when and how it may be fought.

  4. 4

Where does the distinction between greater and lesser jihad come from?

    Model answer

A report describes the Prophet returning from battle and saying they had come from the lesser to the greater jihad. Hadith scholars including al-Bayhaqi graded that report weak, although the teaching it expresses is very widely held.

  5. 5

Why is the greater jihad considered so important?

    Model answer

Every Muslim faces the greater jihad daily, whereas armed struggle arises rarely. The fast, prayer, honesty at work and control of anger all count as forms of it.

  6. 6

Which Qur'anic verses are cited for the personal struggle?

    Model answer

Sura 29:69 promises guidance to those who strive for God. Sura 22:78 commands believers to strive for God as they ought to strive.
