Why did the Church need a doctrine of the Trinity at all?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the doctrine of the Trinity.
Model answer
The doctrine of the Trinity holds that God is one being in three persons. Father, Son and Holy Spirit are distinct persons sharing one divine essence.
- 2
Why did the Church need a doctrine of the Trinity at all?
Model answer
Christians worshipped Jesus and prayed to the Spirit while insisting there is only one God. Some formula was required to hold monotheism and that practice together.
- 3
What does the pre-existence of Christ mean?
Model answer
Pre-existence means the Son existed with the Father before the incarnation and before creation. John 1:1 places the Word with God in the beginning.
- 4
Which texts are used to support the divinity of Christ?
Model answer
John 1:1 calls the Word God, and John 20:28 has Thomas address Jesus as my Lord and my God. Colossians 1:15-20 presents Christ as the one in whom all things hold together.
- 5
What did Arius teach about the Son?
Model answer
Arius taught that the Son is the highest of creatures, made by the Father before time began. The Son therefore had a beginning and is not eternal.
- 6
How did the Council of Nicaea answer Arius?
Model answer
Nicaea in 325 CE declared the Son homoousios, of one substance with the Father. The Son is begotten and not made, and so is co-eternal with the Father.
