Why is naturalism a cognitivist theory?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What question does meta-ethics ask?
Model answer
Meta-ethics asks what moral language means and whether moral claims can be true. Normative ethics asks instead which actions are right.
- 2
Define ethical naturalism.
Model answer
Ethical naturalism holds that moral facts are objective and hold whatever anyone thinks. Moral terms can be understood by analysing features of the natural world.
- 3
Why is naturalism a cognitivist theory?
Model answer
A cognitivist theory treats moral statements as expressing beliefs that can be true or false. Naturalism holds that moral statements state facts and can be verified or falsified.
- 4
How would a naturalist verify the claim that an act is wrong?
Model answer
The naturalist examines the natural facts the moral term picks out, such as the suffering caused. The moral claim is then true or false according to those facts.
- 5
What follows for moral disagreement if naturalism is true?
Model answer
Moral disagreement is factual disagreement and is settled by finding out how things are. One party to the dispute is simply mistaken.
- 6
Which philosopher does the specification name as a naturalist, and what did he hold?
Model answer
F. H. Bradley is named. Bradley held that ethical sentences express propositions made true or false by objective features of the world.
