Define soft determinism.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define hard determinism.
Model answer
Hard determinism holds that every event including every human choice is fully caused by prior events. Free will is therefore an illusion.
- 2
Define soft determinism.
Model answer
Soft determinism, or compatibilism, holds that determinism is true but that freedom and responsibility survive. Freedom is redefined as acting without external constraint.
- 3
What is Locke's locked-room illustration?
Model answer
A sleeping man is carried into a room and locked in, then wakes and chooses to stay. The man believes he is acting freely while the door has in fact been locked.
- 4
What does the illustration show?
Model answer
A person can feel free while their options are in fact closed off. The feeling of freedom is no evidence of having it.
- 5
Is Locke best described as a hard determinist?
Model answer
Locke is usually read as a compatibilist rather than a hard determinist. A person is free, for Locke, when able to do what they will, though the will itself is caused.
- 6
Define biological determinism.
Model answer
Biological determinism holds that behaviour is fixed by genetic and physiological causes. Aggression, addiction and temperament are given genetic explanations.
