Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Who were the Logical Positivists?
Model answer
The Logical Positivists were a group of philosophers and scientists known as the Vienna Circle. Moritz Schlick led the group in the 1920s and 1930s.
- 2
State the verification principle.
Model answer
A statement is meaningful only if it is analytic or verifiable by sense experience. Statements failing both tests are dismissed as literally meaningless.
- 3
What is an analytic statement?
Model answer
An analytic statement is true or false by the meanings of its words alone. Bachelors are unmarried men is the standard example.
- 4
In which work does Ayer set out the verification principle?
Model answer
Ayer sets it out in Language, Truth and Logic, published in 1936. The book introduced Logical Positivism to English readers.
- 5
How does Ayer state his test for factual significance?
Model answer
Ayer asks what observations would lead someone to accept a statement as true or reject it as false. A sentence with no such observations is factually insignificant.
- 6
Distinguish strong from weak verification.
Model answer
Strong verification requires conclusive proof by observation. Weak verification requires only that some observation could count towards the statement's probability.
