What does Pesach commemorate?
Which chapters of Exodus underlie Pesach?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does Pesach commemorate?
Model answer
Pesach commemorates the exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. The name recalls God passing over the Israelite houses during the tenth plague.
- 2
Which chapters of Exodus underlie Pesach?
Model answer
Exodus 12-15 records the tenth plague, the first Passover meal, the departure and the crossing of the sea. Exodus 12 gives the instructions the seder still follows.
- 3
Why is Pesach so widely observed among Jews today?
Model answer
Surveys of British and American Jews find the seder the most widely kept observance of all. Family setting, food and a story to tell make it accessible even to non-observant Jews.
- 4
What is the seder?
Model answer
The seder is the ordered ritual meal on the first night of Pesach, and on the second night in the diaspora. Fifteen stages move through story, symbols, meal and praise.
- 5
What is the Haggadah?
Model answer
The Haggadah is the book that sets out the order of the seder and tells the exodus story. The text is built from scripture, midrash, psalms and songs.
- 6
What does the Haggadah require of every participant?
Model answer
The Haggadah says that each person must see themselves as having personally come out of Egypt. Retelling is therefore participation rather than mere remembrance.
