What did Augustine teach about infant baptism and salvation?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is baptism in Christian practice?
Model answer
Baptism is the rite of initiation into the Church, using water in the name of the Trinity. Most traditions treat it as the formal beginning of the Christian life.
- 2
What did Augustine teach about infant baptism and salvation?
Model answer
Augustine taught that every child inherits original sin from Adam. Baptism removes that guilt, so unbaptised infants were thought to be excluded from the vision of God.
- 3
Which texts did Augustine use to defend infant baptism?
Model answer
Augustine appealed to John 3:5, where no one enters the kingdom without being born of water and Spirit. Household baptisms in Acts 16 were also cited as including children.
- 4
What role did Augustine give to Christian parents at a baptism?
Model answer
Augustine held that parents and godparents present the child and profess the faith on its behalf. The faith of the Church carries the infant until it can profess faith itself.
- 5
How did Zwingli defend infant baptism?
Model answer
Zwingli treated baptism as the covenant sign of belonging to God's people, replacing circumcision. Children of believers therefore belong within the covenant community from birth.
- 6
How does Zwingli's defence of infant baptism differ from Augustine's?
Model answer
Augustine makes baptism the means of removing original sin, and so necessary for salvation. Zwingli denied that the water saves and treated baptism as a public sign of covenant membership.
