Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Where does the dialogue between Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna take place?
Model answer
The dialogue takes place on the battlefield of Kurukṣetra between two drawn-up armies. The Bhagavad Gītā sits inside the sixth book of the Mahābhārata.
- 2
What causes Arjuna's crisis at the opening of the Bhagavad Gītā?
Model answer
Arjuna sees teachers and kinsmen in the opposing army and lets his bow fall. The killing of his own kin seems to him worse than refusing to fight.
- 3
Define svadharma.
Model answer
Svadharma is a person's own duty, set by birth, stage of life and circumstance. Kṛṣṇa treats svadharma as the proper ground of right action.
- 4
Define varṇadharma.
Model answer
Varṇadharma is the duty attaching to a person's varṇa or social class. A kṣatriya's varṇadharma includes protection of others and a righteous war.
- 5
How does Bhagavad Gītā 2:31 answer Arjuna's refusal to fight?
Model answer
Gītā 2:31 tells Arjuna to look to his own dharma and not to waver. Nothing better exists for a warrior than a war fought for what is right.
- 6
What conflict of duties does the Gītā expose?
Model answer
Arjuna's duty as a warrior collides with his duty to kinsmen and teachers. The Gītā insists that abandoning svadharma is no escape from that conflict.
