What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is flexibility vital to a gymnast?
Which factors limit flexibility at a joint?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is flexibility?
Model answer
Flexibility is the range of movement possible at a joint. Flexibility depends on the joint's structure and the stretch in its muscles, tendons and ligaments.
- 2
Why is flexibility vital to a gymnast?
Model answer
A gymnast must reach extreme positions such as the splits and back walkovers. Good flexibility allows these shapes with control and a lower risk of injury.
- 3
Which factors limit flexibility at a joint?
Model answer
Joint type, the elasticity of muscles and connective tissue, and body temperature all limit flexibility. Age and sex also have an effect.
- 4
Why does flexibility tend to decrease with age?
Model answer
Connective tissue becomes less elastic and muscles shorten with age and inactivity. Regular stretching can slow the loss.
- 5
How can poor flexibility increase injury risk?
Model answer
Tight muscles resist sudden stretching and are more likely to tear. A hurdler with tight hamstrings risks a strain when driving the lead leg.
- 6
What is the difference between static and dynamic flexibility?
Model answer
Static flexibility is the range reached and held with no movement, as in the splits. Dynamic flexibility is the range used during movement, as in a high kick in martial arts.
