Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a skill continuum?
Model answer
A skill continuum is a scale between two extremes on which a skill is placed. Most skills lie somewhere between the ends.
- 2
What is an open skill?
Model answer
An open skill is performed in a changing environment and must be adapted to the situation. A pass in hockey is an open skill.
- 3
What is a closed skill?
Model answer
A closed skill is performed in a stable, predictable environment and is not affected by others. A free throw in basketball is a closed skill.
- 4
Why is a tennis serve often placed towards the closed end of the continuum?
Model answer
The server controls the ball and the timing in a stable setting. Some adjustment for the opponent's position still occurs.
- 5
What is a self-paced skill?
Model answer
A self-paced skill is started and controlled by the performer. A golf drive is self-paced.
- 6
What is an externally paced skill?
Model answer
An externally paced skill is controlled by the environment or others, such as reacting to a starting gun. A goalkeeper's save is externally paced.
