- 3 things to know
- AS 2
Overview
Energy intake and expenditure, daily energy and deficit calculations, BMI and its categories and limits, body composition, waist fat and waist-to-height ratio, and weight management in sport.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does energy intake compared with energy expenditure decide weight change?
What makes up a person's total daily energy expenditure?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does energy intake compared with energy expenditure decide weight change?
Model answer
Energy eaten but not used is stored, mainly as fat, so weight rises. A body using more energy than it takes in draws on its stores, so weight falls.
- 2
What makes up a person's total daily energy expenditure?
Model answer
Total energy expenditure combines basal metabolic rate, the energy used digesting food and the energy used in physical activity. Physical activity is the part a person can change most.
- 3
A person's BMR is 1,600 kcal a day and their physical activity level is 1.6. What is their daily energy requirement?
Model answer
The daily energy requirement is 2,560 kcal. The working is 1,600 × 1.6 = 2,560 kcal.
- 4
A student eats 2,300 kcal a day but uses 2,800 kcal. What is the energy balance, and what will happen to body weight?
Model answer
The student has a deficit of 500 kcal a day, so body weight will gradually fall. The working is 2,300 − 2,800 = −500 kcal a day. The weekly deficit is 7 × 500 = 3,500 kcal.
- 5
Why does a daily deficit of 500 kcal lead to only about half a kilogram of weight loss a week?
Model answer
A kilogram of body fat stores roughly 7,700 kcal. A weekly deficit of 3,500 kcal therefore removes only about 0.45 kg of fat.
- 6
What is BMI, and how is it calculated?
Model answer
Body mass index is a measure of weight relative to height. BMI equals body mass in kilograms divided by height in metres squared, giving kg/m².
