Long-term cardiovascular adaptations to training
- 3 things to know
- A2 2
Overview
Heart size, resting stroke volume, bradycardia, resting and maximal cardiac output, capillarisation, VO2 max, blood volume, and the benefits and timescale of adaptation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does regular aerobic training change heart size?
How does training change resting stroke volume?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does regular aerobic training change heart size?
Model answer
The heart muscle, especially the left ventricle wall, becomes larger and stronger. The change is called cardiac hypertrophy.
- 2
How does training change resting stroke volume?
Model answer
Resting stroke volume increases because the larger, stronger heart pumps more blood per beat. The heart works more efficiently.
- 3
What is bradycardia in a trained athlete?
Model answer
Bradycardia is a resting heart rate below 60 beats per minute. A trained heart needs fewer beats to supply the same cardiac output.
- 4
Why does resting cardiac output stay about the same after training?
Model answer
Stroke volume rises while resting heart rate falls. The two changes balance, so resting cardiac output hardly changes.
- 5
How does training change maximal cardiac output?
Model answer
Maximal cardiac output increases because maximal stroke volume rises. More oxygen can be delivered to muscles during hard exercise.
- 6
What is capillarisation?
Model answer
Capillarisation is the growth of new capillaries around muscle fibres and alveoli. More capillaries improve the delivery of oxygen and removal of waste.
