- 1
What is speed as a component of fitness?
Model answer
Speed is the ability to move the body, or a part of it, quickly from one place to another. Speed is calculated as distance divided by time.
- 2
What are accelerative speed, pure speed and speed endurance?
Model answer
Accelerative speed covers sprints up to about 30 m. Pure speed is maximum speed, reached in sprints up to about 60 m. Speed endurance is repeated sprinting with short recoveries.
- 3
A sprinter runs 100 m in 10.5 seconds. What is the average speed?
Model answer
The average speed is 9.52 m s⁻¹. The working is 100 ÷ 10.5 = 9.52 m s⁻¹.
- 4
Why does speed matter to a rugby winger?
Model answer
A winger must accelerate into gaps and outrun defenders over 20 to 40 metres. Pure speed decides whether the winger reaches the try line first.
- 5
What is power as a component of fitness?
Model answer
Power is the ability to combine strength and speed to produce force quickly. Power is often summarised as strength × speed.
- 6
Why is power important in the long jump?
Model answer
The take-off lasts only a fraction of a second, so leg force must be applied very quickly. Greater power produces greater velocity at take-off and a longer jump.
