What is circuit training?
How can a circuit be made specific to a sport?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is circuit training?
Model answer
Circuit training is a series of exercises, or stations, performed in turn with short rests. Each station works a different muscle group or component of fitness.
- 2
How can a circuit be made specific to a sport?
Model answer
Stations can copy the sport's movements, such as dribbling and shooting stations for basketball. Work and rest times can match the sport's energy demands.
- 3
Evaluate circuit training.
Model answer
Circuit training is adaptable, suits groups and can train several components at once. Circuit training needs space, equipment and supervision, because technique slips as participants tire.
- 4
What is weight or resistance training?
Model answer
Resistance training makes muscles work against a load, using free weights, machines, bands or body weight. The load, sets and repetitions decide the training effect.
- 5
How does resistance training differ when the aim is strength rather than muscular endurance?
Model answer
Strength training uses heavy loads for few repetitions, recruiting fast twitch fibres. Muscular endurance training uses lighter loads for many repetitions with short rests.
- 6
Evaluate free weights against resistance machines.
Model answer
Free weights train balance and stabilising muscles and suit sport-specific lifts. Machines guide the movement, so they are safer for beginners but less like sporting actions.
