Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are performance-enhancing drugs?
Model answer
Performance-enhancing drugs are substances taken to improve sporting performance unfairly. Many are banned by sport's governing bodies.
- 2
What are anabolic steroids, and why are they banned?
Model answer
Anabolic steroids are synthetic hormones that increase muscle mass and strength and speed recovery. The steroids give an unfair advantage and harm health.
- 3
What is EPO, and why is it misused?
Model answer
EPO, erythropoietin, is a hormone that increases red blood cell production. Endurance athletes misuse it to carry more oxygen.
- 4
What is blood doping?
Model answer
Blood doping is increasing the number of red blood cells, often by re-infusing stored blood. More oxygen reaches the muscles.
- 5
Why are stimulants banned in competition?
Model answer
Stimulants increase alertness and reduce feelings of fatigue. Stimulants can mask injury and strain the heart.
- 6
Why are beta blockers banned in some sports?
Model answer
Beta blockers slow the heart rate and reduce shaking caused by nerves. Precision sports such as archery and shooting ban them.
