Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the seven components of a healthy diet.
Model answer
The seven components are carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre and water. Carbohydrates, proteins and fats are the macronutrients that supply energy.
- 2
What is the main function of carbohydrate?
Model answer
Carbohydrate is the body's main source of energy, especially for high-intensity exercise. Carbohydrate is stored as glycogen in the muscles and liver.
- 3
What is the difference between simple and complex carbohydrates? Give sources of each.
Model answer
Simple carbohydrates are sugars, found in fruit, sweets and sports drinks, and give quick energy. Complex carbohydrates are starches, found in pasta, rice, bread and potatoes, and release energy more slowly.
- 4

Model answer
Fat provides a concentrated energy store and insulates the body. Fat also protects vital organs and carries the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K.
- 5
What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats?
Model answer
Saturated fats come mainly from animal products such as butter and fatty meat and are solid at room temperature. Unsaturated fats come from oily fish, nuts and plant oils and are usually liquid.
- 6
How much energy does each macronutrient provide per gram?
Model answer
Carbohydrate and protein each provide about 4 kcal per gram. Fat provides about 9 kcal per gram, more than twice as much.
