Synovial joint structure and types
- 3 things to know
- A2 2
Overview
Joint classification, the capsule, synovial membrane and fluid, ligaments, bursae, menisci and cartilage, and ball and socket, hinge, pivot, saddle, gliding and condyloid joints.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a synovial joint?
What is the function of the joint capsule?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How are joints classified by the amount of movement they allow?
Model answer
Fibrous joints are fixed, such as the sutures of the skull. Cartilaginous joints allow slight movement, as between vertebrae, and synovial joints move freely.
- 2
What is a synovial joint?
Model answer
A synovial joint is a freely movable joint enclosed by a capsule containing synovial fluid. Most joints used in sporting movements are synovial joints.
- 3
What is the function of the joint capsule?
Model answer
The joint capsule is a tough, fibrous sleeve that encloses a synovial joint. The capsule holds the bones together and keeps the synovial fluid in place.
- 4
What does the synovial membrane do?
Model answer
The synovial membrane lines the inside of the joint capsule. The membrane secretes synovial fluid into the joint cavity.
- 5
Explain the functions of synovial fluid.
Model answer
Synovial fluid lubricates the joint so the bone ends move with little friction. The fluid also nourishes the articular cartilage and removes waste from it.
- 6
What is the role of ligaments at a synovial joint?
Model answer
Ligaments are bands of tough, slightly elastic tissue that join bone to bone. Ligaments stabilise the joint and limit excessive movement.
