Tests of aerobic endurance
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
The multi-stage fitness test, Yo-Yo test, Cooper run, Harvard and Queens College step tests, the Rockport walk, worked VO₂ max and fitness index calculations, and heart rate recovery.
What you need to know

What does the multi-stage fitness test score predict?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How is the multi-stage fitness test carried out?
Model answer
Performers run back and forth between lines 20 m apart in time with bleeps that get faster each level. The test ends when the performer twice fails to reach the line before the bleep.
- 2
What does the multi-stage fitness test score predict?
Model answer
The level and shuttle reached are used to predict VO₂ max from a published table. A higher level indicates better aerobic endurance.
- 3
Evaluate the multi-stage fitness test.
Model answer
The multi-stage fitness test is cheap, tests large groups at once and suits games players who turn. The test is maximal and depends on motivation. Skill at turning affects the score, so the test suits cyclists and swimmers less well.
- 4
How does the Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test differ from the multi-stage fitness test?
Model answer
The Yo-Yo test adds a short active rest of about ten seconds after each pair of 20 m shuttles. The Yo-Yo test copies the stop-start pattern of team games more closely.
- 5
How is the Cooper 12-minute run carried out?
Model answer
The performer runs, or walks if needed, as far as possible in 12 minutes, usually around a 400 m track. The distance covered is compared with norms or used to estimate VO₂ max.
- 6
A runner covers 2800 m in the Cooper test. Estimate VO₂ max using VO₂ max = (distance in metres − 504.9) ÷ 44.73.
Model answer
The estimated VO₂ max is 51.3 ml/kg/min. The working is (2800 − 504.9) ÷ 44.73 = 2295.1 ÷ 44.73 = 51.3.
