- 1
What is motivation in sport?
Model answer
Motivation is the drive to achieve a goal and the effort put into doing so. Motivation affects how hard and how long a person practises.
- 2
What is intrinsic motivation?
Model answer
Intrinsic motivation comes from within, such as enjoyment or satisfaction from the activity. Intrinsically motivated performers tend to keep practising.
- 3
What is extrinsic motivation?
Model answer
Extrinsic motivation comes from outside the performer, such as rewards or praise. Extrinsic motivation can boost effort in the short term.
- 4
What is a tangible reward?
Model answer
A tangible reward is a physical reward, such as a trophy, medal or money. Tangible rewards can be seen and touched.
- 5
What is an intangible reward?
Model answer
An intangible reward is a non-physical reward, such as praise or recognition. Encouragement from a coach is intangible.
- 6
Why can too many extrinsic rewards reduce motivation?
Model answer
Over-reliance on rewards can undermine enjoyment of the activity itself. Performers may lose interest when the rewards stop.
