Training Methods
Continuous, fartlek, interval and speed training
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
Aerobic and anaerobic training, continuous, fartlek and interval training, HIIT, speed training, resisted, assisted and hollow sprints, and choosing a method for 400 m and 10 km runners.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a hollow sprint?
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic training?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the difference between aerobic and anaerobic training?
Model answer
Aerobic training is steady, lower-intensity work that improves oxygen delivery and use. Anaerobic training is short, high-intensity work that develops the ATP-PC and lactic acid systems.
- 2
What is continuous training?
Model answer
Continuous training is steady exercise without rest for at least 20 minutes, such as running, cycling or swimming. The intensity is usually about 60 to 80% of maximum heart rate.
- 3
Evaluate continuous training for a long-distance runner.
Model answer
Continuous training is highly specific to distance running and needs little equipment. Continuous training can be boring and does little for speed or anaerobic fitness.
- 4
What is fartlek training?
Model answer
Fartlek, Swedish for speed play, is continuous running with changes of pace and terrain. Sprints, jogs and hill runs are mixed without full rest.
- 5
Why does fartlek training suit games players?
Model answer
Fartlek mixes aerobic and anaerobic work, just as a hockey or football match does. The changes of pace and scenery also reduce boredom.
- 6
What are the disadvantages of fartlek training?
Model answer
Fartlek is hard to monitor because intensity is often set by feel. Performers may ease off in the hard sections without close supervision.
