- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
The handgrip dynamometer, 1RM, press-up, sit-up and abdominal curl tests, the vertical jump with a worked score, the broad jump, the Wingate test and the medicine ball throw.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Evaluate the handgrip dynamometer test.
What is a one-repetition maximum test?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How is the handgrip dynamometer test carried out?
Model answer
The performer squeezes the dynamometer as hard as possible with the arm by the side. The best of several attempts on each hand is recorded in kilograms.
- 2
Evaluate the handgrip dynamometer test.
Model answer
The handgrip test is quick, cheap and reliable. The handgrip test measures only hand and forearm strength, so it is a poor guide to leg or whole-body strength.
- 3
What is a one-repetition maximum test?
Model answer
A 1RM test finds the heaviest load a performer can lift once with correct technique. The load is increased gradually, with rests, until only one lift is possible.
- 4
Why is a 1RM test unsuitable for beginners?
Model answer
Maximal lifts put great stress on muscles, joints and the back. Beginners lack the technique to lift maximal loads safely, so a sub-maximal repetition test is safer.
- 5
Which test would suit the leg strength of a rugby forward, and why?
Model answer
A 1RM back squat or leg press measures leg strength directly. The test suits a trained forward who already has good lifting technique.
- 6
How is the one-minute press-up test carried out?
Model answer
The performer does as many correct press-ups as possible in 60 seconds. The chest must lower to a set point and the arms straighten fully for each one to count.
