Resistance loads, work to recovery ratios and the Borg scale
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
Repetition maximum, sets and reps for strength, size and endurance, worked 1RM loads, progressive resistive exercise, work to recovery ratios and the Borg scale of perceived exertion.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why are training loads set as a percentage of 1RM?
What is the difference between a set and a repetition?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a repetition maximum?
Model answer
A repetition maximum is the heaviest load that can be lifted for a set number of repetitions. A 1RM is lifted once, and a 10RM is the heaviest load lifted ten times.
- 2
Why are training loads set as a percentage of 1RM?
Model answer
A percentage of 1RM sets the load precisely for each person's strength. The same percentage then gives the same training effect for a strong and a weak lifter.
- 3
What is the difference between a set and a repetition?
Model answer
A repetition is one complete movement of an exercise. A set is a group of repetitions done without rest, such as three sets of ten.
- 4
Which loads and repetitions develop maximal strength?
Model answer
Maximal strength is developed with heavy loads of about 85% of 1RM or more, for up to about six repetitions. Rests are long, typically two to five minutes.
- 5
Which loads and repetitions develop muscular endurance?
Model answer
Muscular endurance is developed with light loads of about 67% of 1RM or less, for 12 or more repetitions. Rest periods are short, often 30 seconds or less.
- 6
Which loads and repetitions develop muscle size?
Model answer
Hypertrophy training commonly uses about 67 to 85% of 1RM for 6 to 12 repetitions. Several sets with rests of 30 to 90 seconds are typical.
