Choosing tests: maximal, sub-maximal and technology
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
Maximal and sub-maximal tests, laboratory and field tests, heart rate monitors, video, timing gates and GPS, and choosing tests for netball, cycling and rugby players.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a sub-maximal fitness test?
Evaluate maximal fitness tests.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a maximal fitness test?
Model answer
A maximal test requires the performer to work to exhaustion or to their absolute limit. The multi-stage fitness test and a 1RM lift are maximal tests.
- 2
What is a sub-maximal fitness test?
Model answer
A sub-maximal test is performed below maximum effort, and the result is used to predict maximal capacity. The Harvard step test and the Rockport walking test are sub-maximal.
- 3
Evaluate maximal fitness tests.
Model answer
Maximal tests measure true capacity directly, so they are usually more accurate. Maximal tests are exhausting and riskier, and the score depends on the performer's motivation.
- 4
What are the advantages and disadvantages of sub-maximal tests?
Model answer
Sub-maximal tests are safer and suit beginners, older adults and people with health conditions. The results are predictions, so they are less accurate than a direct maximal measure.
- 5
Why might an instructor choose a sub-maximal aerobic test for a new client aged 55?
Model answer
A maximal test carries unnecessary cardiac risk for an untrained older person. A sub-maximal test estimates aerobic fitness safely and can be repeated to track progress.
- 6
What is the difference between a laboratory test and a field test?
Model answer
A laboratory test uses specialist equipment in controlled conditions, such as a treadmill test with gas analysis. A field test is simpler and done in a sports setting, such as the multi-stage fitness test.
