Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is general strength?

    Model answer

General strength is the overall ability of the body's major muscle groups to exert force against a resistance. General strength is not tied to the movements of any one sport.

  2. 2

    What is specific strength?

    Model answer

Specific strength is strength in the muscles and movement patterns that a particular sport uses. A shot putter needs specific strength in the legs, trunk and pushing arm.

  3. 3

Why is general strength usually built before specific strength in a training year?

    Model answer

General strength gives a balanced base in all major muscle groups, which protects joints and tendons. Specific strength work is added closer to competition, when training must match the sport.

  4. 4

Why does a rugby prop need both general and specific strength?

    Model answer

General strength across the whole body helps the prop withstand repeated collisions and resist injury. Specific strength in the legs, back and shoulders drives the scrum forward.

  5. 5

How does a tennis player use specific strength in the serve?

    Model answer

The serve needs strong, fast rotation of the trunk and shoulder. Specific strength training copies the serving action, for example with rotational cable or band work.

  6. 6

    What is muscular endurance?

    Model answer

Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle to contract repeatedly, or hold a contraction, without tiring. The muscle resists fatigue across many repetitions at a submaximal load.
