Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is periodisation?
Model answer
Periodisation is dividing a training year into planned phases, each with its own aims. The plan builds towards peak performance at the key competitions.
- 2
What is a macrocycle?
Model answer
A macrocycle is the longest training cycle, usually a whole season or year. An Olympic athlete's macrocycle can span four years.

Model answer
A mesocycle is a block of several weeks with one main training focus. A mesocycle might target strength during the preparation phase.
- 4
What is a microcycle?
Model answer
A microcycle is the shortest training cycle, usually one week. A microcycle sets out each day's session and rest.
- 5
What are the three phases of a periodised year?
Model answer
The three phases are preparation, competition and transition. Preparation builds fitness, and competition maintains it while sharpening performance. Transition allows recovery.

What happens during the preparation phase?
Model answer
The early preparation phase builds a general base of aerobic fitness and strength. The later part becomes more specific, with higher intensity and sport-specific work.
