Safety and Risk Assessment in Training
Safe practice during fitness tests and training
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
Planning safety into testing, PAR-Q responses, asthma, warm-ups, 1RM technique and spotting, contraindicated exercises, the ten per cent rule, burnout, stopping a session, meals and hydration.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why must safety be planned into every fitness testing session?
How should a tester respond when a performer's PAR-Q reports chest pain during exercise?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why must safety be planned into every fitness testing session?
Model answer
Many tests push performers to their limits, raising the risk of injury, fainting or cardiac problems. Health screening, close supervision and correct protocol keep that risk low.
- 2
How should a tester respond when a performer's PAR-Q reports chest pain during exercise?
Model answer
The performer must not take part in testing and should be referred to a doctor. Chest pain on exertion can signal a heart condition.
- 3
Why should a tester know about a performer's asthma before a fitness test?
Model answer
Hard exercise can trigger an asthma attack, and the reliever inhaler must be close at hand. A tester who knows about the condition can recognise and respond to an attack quickly.
- 4
Why must a thorough warm-up come before a maximal fitness test?
Model answer
A warm-up raises muscle temperature and heart rate gradually, so muscles contract more forcefully and are less likely to tear. A warm-up also makes the result more valid.
- 5
Why should a performer walk and stretch after the multi-stage fitness test rather than sit down at once?
Model answer
Stopping suddenly after maximal running lets blood pool in the legs, which can cause dizziness or fainting. An active cool-down keeps blood returning to the heart and helps clear lactic acid.
- 6
How is safe technique ensured during a 1RM test?
Model answer
A trained spotter stands by, and the load is increased in small steps with full rests. Any lift with poor technique is stopped and not counted.
