The ATP-PC, lactic acid and aerobic energy systems
- 3 things to know
- AS 1
Overview
ATP and its resynthesis, the ATP-PC, lactic acid and aerobic systems, their durations and events, fatigue, fat as fuel, the energy continuum, thresholds and a midfielder's energy use.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why must ATP be resynthesised constantly during exercise?
How does the ATP-PC system resynthesise ATP?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is ATP, and why do muscles need it?
Model answer
ATP, adenosine triphosphate, is the only molecule muscles can use directly for energy. Energy is released when ATP breaks down to ADP and a phosphate.
- 2
Why must ATP be resynthesised constantly during exercise?
Model answer
Muscles store only enough ATP for about two to three seconds of maximal work. The energy systems rebuild ATP from ADP so contraction can continue.
- 3
How does the ATP-PC system resynthesise ATP?
Model answer
Phosphocreatine stored in the muscle is broken down, releasing energy without oxygen. The energy rebuilds ATP from ADP and phosphate.
- 4
How long does the ATP-PC system last, and which activities rely on it?
Model answer
The ATP-PC system supplies maximal energy for about 8 to 10 seconds. A 100 m sprint, a shot put or a weightlifting attempt relies on it.
- 5
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the ATP-PC system?
Model answer
The ATP-PC system is very fast, needs no oxygen and produces no fatiguing by-products. Phosphocreatine stores run out in about ten seconds and take around three minutes to fully recover.
- 6
How does the lactic acid system resynthesise ATP?
Model answer
Glucose from muscle glycogen is broken down without oxygen in anaerobic glycolysis. The process gives two ATP per glucose molecule and forms lactic acid.

Every question in Training Methods, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
