Adaptations for Nutrition
Modes of Nutrition: Autotrophic, Heterotrophic and Holozoic
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Autotrophic, Heterotrophic, Saprotrophic and Holozoic.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish between photoautotrophic and chemoautotrophic organisms.
Define heterotrophic nutrition.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define autotrophic nutrition.
Model answer
Autotrophic nutrition is the synthesis of complex organic molecules from simple inorganic ones such as carbon dioxide, water and mineral ions, using an external source of energy.
- 2
Define heterotrophic nutrition.
Model answer
Heterotrophic nutrition is the taking in and use of ready-made complex organic molecules that have been produced by other organisms.
- 3
Distinguish between photoautotrophic and chemoautotrophic organisms.
Model answer
A photoautotroph uses light as its energy source for making organic molecules, whereas a chemoautotroph uses energy released by oxidising inorganic chemicals.
- 4
Give an example of a chemoautotrophic organism and state the reaction it uses as its energy source.
Model answer
Nitrifying bacteria are chemoautotrophs, and they obtain their energy by oxidising ammonium ions or nitrite ions.
- 5
Why are autotrophs described as the producers of an ecosystem?
Model answer
They are the only organisms that make organic molecules from inorganic sources, so all the energy and organic matter entering the food chain passes through them first.
- 6
Name the three types of heterotrophic nutrition.
Model answer
The three types are saprotrophic nutrition, holozoic nutrition and parasitic nutrition.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Adaptations for Nutrition, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
