Graphs: Translating Between Graphical, Plotting Two Variables and Linear Relationships
- 3 things to know
- All units
Overview
Recall questions on Translating Between Graphical, Numerical, Algebraic Forms, Plotting Two Variables and Linear Relationships.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What do m and c represent in the equation y = mx + c?
Which variable belongs on each axis of a graph of experimental results?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which variable belongs on each axis of a graph of experimental results?
Model answer
The independent variable goes on the horizontal axis and the dependent variable on the vertical axis.
- 2
What two things must each axis of a graph show?
Model answer
Each axis must name the quantity being shown and must give the unit in which it is measured.
- 3
What makes a scale suitable for a graph?
Model answer
The scale should be based on convenient intervals such as 1, 2 or 5 units, and it should be chosen so that the plotted points fill more than half of the available grid in both directions.
- 4
When should a smooth curve of best fit be used instead of joining points with straight lines?
Model answer
A curve of best fit is used when the underlying relationship is expected to be continuous, whereas straight lines between points imply nothing is known about the values in between.
- 5
How would you obtain a numerical value from an oxygen dissociation curve?
Model answer
Read across from the chosen partial pressure of oxygen on the horizontal axis to the curve, then down or across to read the corresponding percentage saturation of haemoglobin.
- 6
What do m and c represent in the equation y = mx + c?
Model answer
m is the gradient of the line and c is the value of y where the line crosses the vertical axis.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Mathematical Requirements (Appendix C), on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
