Independent Thinking and Use of Scientific Methods and Practices: Making and Keeping Records
- 3 things to know
- All units
Overview
Recall questions on Making, Recording Observations and Keeping Records.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish between a hazard and a risk.
Why is it often better to express a result as a percentage change rather than as an absolute change?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Distinguish between raw data and processed data.
Model answer
Raw data are the values read directly from the instruments, whereas processed data are values calculated from them such as means, rates or percentage changes.
- 2
What four conventions should be followed when presenting results in a table?
Model answer
Each column heading gives the quantity and its unit with the unit not repeated beside every value, the independent variable occupies the first column, raw data columns come before processed columns, and all values in a column are given to the same number of decimal places.
- 3
Why is it often better to express a result as a percentage change rather than as an absolute change?
Model answer
A percentage change allows samples that began at different values to be compared fairly, as when potato pieces of different starting mass are used.
- 4
What is a risk assessment?
Model answer
A risk assessment identifies the hazards presented by the materials, apparatus and procedure, judges how likely and how serious the harm could be, and states the control measures that will reduce that risk.
- 5
Distinguish between a hazard and a risk.
Model answer
A hazard is something with the potential to cause harm, whereas the risk is the likelihood that it will actually cause harm in the way it is being used.
- 6
What four precautions are taken when culturing microorganisms in a school laboratory?
Model answer
Aseptic technique is used with the work carried out beside a flame, plates are taped rather than sealed and are not opened after incubation, benches are disinfected and hands washed, and all cultures are sterilised before disposal.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Working Scientifically: Practical Skills, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
