Joints
Joints as First, Second, Third Order Levers and Antagonistic Muscle Action in the Forelimb
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Recall questions on Joints as First, Second, Third Order Levers and Antagonistic Muscle Action in the Forelimb.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Where are the origin and the insertion of the biceps?
What is the function of a tendon?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the function of a tendon?
Model answer
A tendon attaches a muscle to a bone and transmits the force generated by the contracting muscle to that bone.
- 2
Why must a tendon be inelastic?
Model answer
If the tendon stretched, the shortening of the muscle would be taken up by the tendon instead of pulling on the bone, so the bone would not move.
- 3
Why is it useful for ligaments to be slightly elastic?
Model answer
Slight elasticity allows the bones to move relative to one another during normal movement while still returning the joint to its correct position.
- 4
What does the fibrous capsule of a synovial joint do?
Model answer
It encloses the joint, holds the synovial fluid in the cavity and adds to the strength and stability of the joint.
- 5
Define antagonistic muscle action.
Model answer
Antagonistic muscle action is the arrangement in which two muscles pull a bone in opposite directions, so that when one contracts the other relaxes.
- 6
Why is a pair of muscles needed to move a bone at a joint?
Model answer
A muscle can exert force only by contracting and shortening, so it cannot push a bone back, and a second muscle acting in the opposite direction is required to reverse the movement.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Joints, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
