Developing and Communicating Scientific Explanations: Using Theories, Models and Ideas
- 3 things to know
- All units
Overview
Recall questions on Using Theories, Models and Ideas.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why was the lock and key model of enzyme action refined into the induced fit model?
What must be identified before an investigation can be planned?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a scientific theory?
Model answer
It is a well-tested explanation that accounts for a wide range of observations and is supported by a large body of evidence, and it can be used to make predictions.
- 2
Distinguish between a hypothesis and a theory.
Model answer
A hypothesis is a proposed explanation put forward to be tested, whereas a theory is an explanation that has already survived extensive testing and is supported by a great deal of evidence.
- 3
What makes a hypothesis scientific?
Model answer
It must be testable, so that evidence could in principle be gathered which would show it to be false.
- 4
What is a scientific model?
Model answer
It is a simplified representation of a structure or process used to explain observations and to make predictions that can then be tested.
- 5
Give two limitations of using a model in biology.
Model answer
A model is a simplification and so leaves out factors that operate in the real system, and it rests on assumptions that may prove wrong when new evidence appears.
- 6
Why was the lock and key model of enzyme action refined into the induced fit model?
Model answer
Evidence showed that the active site changes shape as the substrate binds rather than being a rigid complementary shape, so the model was modified to fit the new observations.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in How Science Works (Appendix D), on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
