The Mammalian Heart and Circulation: Sino-atrial Node, Purkyne Fibres and Electrocardiograms
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Sino-atrial Node, Purkyne Fibres and Electrocardiograms.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is there a short delay at the atrioventricular node, what stops excitation passing straight to the ventricles, and what does it mean to describe cardiac muscle as myogenic?
A low-power plan of an artery measures 75 mm across and the actual artery is 3 mm in diameter. Calculate the magnification of the drawing.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What should a low-power plan of a transverse section of an artery show, and what must it not show?
Model answer
It should show only the outlines of the tissue layers drawn in correct proportion, and individual cells must not be drawn.
- 2
A low-power plan of an artery measures 75 mm across and the actual artery is 3 mm in diameter. Calculate the magnification of the drawing.
Model answer
The magnification is ×25, found by dividing the drawing size of 75 mm by the actual size of 3 mm.
- 3
An eyepiece graticule is calibrated so that one division equals 10 μm. A vein wall spans 12 divisions. State its thickness.
Model answer
The wall is 120 μm thick, since 12 divisions multiplied by 10 μm per division gives 120 μm.
- 4
What happens during atrial systole?
Model answer
Both atria contract, raising atrial pressure above ventricular pressure so the atrioventricular valves stay open and the last of the blood is pushed into the ventricles.
- 5
What happens during ventricular systole?
Model answer
The ventricles contract from the apex upwards so ventricular pressure rises sharply, closing the atrioventricular valves and forcing the semilunar valves open to eject blood into the aorta and pulmonary artery.
- 6
What happens during diastole?
Model answer
All the chambers relax, so ventricular pressure falls below arterial pressure and the semilunar valves close, and blood flows passively into the atria and on into the ventricles from the veins.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Adaptations for Transport, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
