Population Growth and Its Regulation: Birth and Immigration
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on Birth and Immigration.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a population?
Which four processes change the size of a population?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a population?
Model answer
A population is all the individuals of one species living in the same place at the same time and able to interbreed.
- 2
Which four processes change the size of a population?
Model answer
Births, deaths, immigration and emigration.
- 3
Give the relationship used to calculate the change in a population over a period of time.
Model answer
Population change = (births + immigration) − (deaths + emigration), so the two inputs are added together and the two losses are subtracted as a group.
- 4
A population of 500 voles had 40 births and 18 deaths in a year, with 7 individuals arriving and 12 leaving. Calculate the population at the end of the year.
Model answer
The gains are 40 + 7 = 47 and the losses are 18 + 12 = 30, so the population rises by 17 to 517.
- 5
What is meant by birth rate?
Model answer
It is the number of new individuals produced in a population per unit time, usually expressed per thousand individuals per year.
- 6
Distinguish between immigration and emigration.
Model answer
Immigration is the movement of individuals into a population from elsewhere, whereas emigration is the movement of individuals out of it.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Population Size and Ecosystems, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
