Amino Acids and Proteins: Fibrous and Globular Forms
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Recall questions on Fibrous and Globular Forms.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why are globular proteins soluble in water?
A single amino acid in a polypeptide is replaced by one with a very different R group. Suggest the consequence.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a prosthetic group, and what is a protein containing one called?
Model answer
A prosthetic group is a permanently attached non-protein component, such as the haem group, and a protein containing one is a conjugated protein.
- 2
State three characteristics of fibrous proteins.
Model answer
They consist of long parallel polypeptide chains with cross-links, they are insoluble in water, and they have a repetitive amino acid sequence giving a structural role.
- 3
How does the structure of collagen suit its function?
Model answer
Three polypeptide chains are wound around each other into a triple helix and cross-linked between molecules, giving very high tensile strength suited to tendons, skin and artery walls.
- 4
State three characteristics of globular proteins.
Model answer
They are compact and roughly spherical, they are soluble in water, and they have metabolic roles such as acting as enzymes or transport molecules.
- 5
Why are globular proteins soluble in water?
Model answer
The chain folds so that hydrophilic R groups face outwards where they interact with water, while hydrophobic R groups are turned into the interior.
- 6
Why does the primary structure of a protein determine its final three-dimensional shape?
Model answer
The sequence of amino acids fixes which R groups are present and where they lie, and it is the interactions between those R groups that determine how the chain folds.

Every question in Chemical Elements Are Joined Together to Form Biological Compounds, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
