Synapses: Structure and Synaptic Transmission
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on Structure and Synaptic Transmission.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why must acetylcholine be broken down after it has acted?
Define the term synapse.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term synapse.
Model answer
A synapse is the junction between two neurones, made up of the presynaptic membrane, the synaptic cleft and the postsynaptic membrane.
- 2
State the approximate width of a synaptic cleft.
Model answer
It is about 20 nm across.
- 3
Why does the presynaptic knob contain large numbers of mitochondria?
Model answer
They supply the ATP needed to resynthesise the neurotransmitter and to move the vesicles to the presynaptic membrane.
- 4
What is contained in the vesicles of a cholinergic synapse?
Model answer
Acetylcholine.
- 5
What does acetylcholine bind to on the postsynaptic membrane?
Model answer
Specific receptor proteins, which form part of chemically gated sodium channels.
- 6
Explain why transmission across a synapse can occur in one direction only.
Model answer
Neurotransmitter is stored and released only from the presynaptic knob, and the receptors for it are present only on the postsynaptic membrane.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in The Nervous System, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
