Isolation
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Recall questions on Isolation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain how seasonal isolation prevents interbreeding.
Define speciation.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is the biological species definition difficult to apply to some organisms?
Model answer
It depends on interbreeding to produce fertile offspring, which cannot be tested in organisms that reproduce asexually, in extinct species known only from fossils, or in populations that are separated geographically and never meet, and it is blurred where related species produce fertile hybrids.
- 2
Define speciation.
Model answer
Speciation is the formation of one or more new species from an existing species.
- 3
What must happen to gene flow before speciation can occur?
Model answer
Gene flow between the two groups must be prevented, so that their gene pools become separate.
- 4
Outline how two isolated populations of one species may become separate species.
Model answer
Different mutations arise and different selection pressures act on each isolated gene pool, so allele frequencies diverge until the two groups can no longer interbreed successfully.
- 5
What is allopatric speciation?
Model answer
It is speciation that follows the separation of populations by a geographical barrier.
- 6
What are two examples of a geographical barrier?
Model answer
A stretch of sea and a mountain range.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Variation and Evolution, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
