What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is rheumatoid arthritis described as a systemic disease?
What movement does a hinge joint allow, and where are two examples found?
What is the function of the synovial membrane?
Describe the action of the biceps and triceps when the arm is bent at the elbow.
Where are the origin and the insertion of the biceps?
What is meant by arthritis?
What causes rheumatoid arthritis?
What is a joint?
What is the function of a tendon?
What are osteophytes?

Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a joint?
Model answer
A joint is a point at which two or more bones meet.
- 2
Name four types of synovial joint and give an example of each.
Model answer
Hinge joints (the elbow and knee), ball and socket joints (the shoulder and hip), pivot joints (between the atlas and axis vertebrae in the neck) and gliding joints (between the carpals of the wrist).
- 3
Give an example of an immovable joint and state its advantage.
Model answer
The sutures between the bones of the cranium are immovable joints, and because the bones are locked together by fibrous tissue they form a rigid case that protects the brain.
- 4
Describe a gliding joint and give one place it is found.
Model answer
In a gliding joint two almost flat surfaces slide over one another, allowing small movements in several directions, as between the carpals of the wrist.
- 5
What movement does a hinge joint allow, and where are two examples found?
Model answer
A hinge joint allows flexion and extension in one plane only, and examples are the elbow and the knee.
- 6
Describe the structure and range of movement of a ball and socket joint.
Model answer
The rounded head of one bone fits into a cup-shaped socket in another, allowing movement in all planes as well as rotation, as at the shoulder and hip.

Joints revision questions
- What does Joints cover in WJEC A-Level Biology?
- 4 subtopics: types of joint and synovial joint structure, joints as first, second, third order levers and antagonistic muscle action in the forelimb, arthritis: causes and treatment of osteoarthritis and arthritis: rheumatoid arthritis. Each one has its own page with questions and model answers.
- How is Joints organised?
- By the WJEC 601-5290-0 specification, subtopic by subtopic, so it matches the order you are taught it in.
Every question in Joints, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
