Independent Thinking and Use of Scientific Methods and Practices: Solving Problems in Practical Contexts
- 3 things to know
- All units
Overview
Recall questions on Solving Problems in Practical Contexts, Applying Knowledge, Investigative Approaches and Safe Use of Equipment.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish between a control experiment and a controlled variable.
What is the dependent variable?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the independent variable in an investigation?
Model answer
The independent variable is the factor that the investigator deliberately changes.
- 2
What is the dependent variable?
Model answer
The dependent variable is the factor that is measured to see how it responds to the change made.
- 3
What is a controlled variable, and why must such variables be kept constant?
Model answer
A controlled variable is any other factor that could affect the result, and it is held constant so that any change observed can be attributed only to the independent variable.
- 4
In an investigation of the effect of temperature on the rate of an enzyme-controlled reaction, identify the independent variable, the dependent variable and three controlled variables.
Model answer
The independent variable is temperature, the dependent variable is the rate of reaction, and pH, enzyme concentration and substrate concentration must all be controlled.
- 5
Distinguish between a control experiment and a controlled variable.
Model answer
A control experiment is a parallel run in which the factor being tested is absent or inactivated, such as using boiled enzyme, whereas a controlled variable is a factor held constant in every run.
- 6
Why can only one variable be changed at a time?
Model answer
If two factors change together it is impossible to say which of them caused the change in the dependent variable, so no valid conclusion can be drawn.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Working Scientifically: Practical Skills, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
