Limiting Factors in Photosynthesis
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on Limiting Factors in Photosynthesis.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
On a graph of photosynthesis rate against light intensity, what can you conclude about the plateau?
How would raising the carbon dioxide concentration change a graph of photosynthesis rate against light intensity?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
State the law of limiting factors.
Model answer
When a process is affected by more than one factor, its rate is limited by whichever factor is nearest to its minimum value.
- 2
A graph of rate of photosynthesis against light intensity rises and then levels off. What is limiting the rate on the sloping part of the curve?
Model answer
Light intensity is the limiting factor there, because increasing it produces a proportional increase in the rate.
- 3
How would raising the carbon dioxide concentration change such a graph?
Model answer
The initial slope would be unchanged but the curve would continue to rise further before levelling off at a higher plateau.
- 4
Why does light intensity limit the rate of photosynthesis at low intensities?
Model answer
Too few photons are absorbed to excite enough electrons, so ATP and reduced NADP are produced too slowly for the light-independent stage to keep up.
- 5
Why does a shortage of carbon dioxide reduce the rate of photosynthesis?
Model answer
Carbon dioxide is the substrate that Rubisco fixes, so with less of it available fewer molecules of glycerate-3-phosphate are formed each second.
- 6
Why does temperature affect photosynthesis differently from light intensity and carbon dioxide concentration?
Model answer
Temperature acts on the enzymes of the light-independent stage, so the rate rises with temperature up to an optimum but then falls as the enzymes are denatured.
