Overview
Recall questions on Presenting Data, Using Software, Evaluating Results Against Uncertainties, Errors and Commenting on Experimental Design.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
The readings taken at the highest temperatures in an enzyme investigation are widely scattered. Suggest a cause and an improvement.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What three advantages does a data logger have over taking readings by hand?
Model answer
It records automatically and continuously so many readings can be taken over a long period, it responds far faster than a human observer so reaction time errors are removed, and it records at exactly the intervals set.
- 2
What is one disadvantage of relying on a data logger?
Model answer
A sensor that is wrongly calibrated or has drifted will generate a large quantity of inaccurate data without the user noticing an error that would be obvious when reading by hand.
- 3
How does spreadsheet software help in processing experimental results?
Model answer
It calculates means, standard deviations and statistics quickly and without arithmetic slips, and it plots graphs directly from the data so that trends can be seen at once.
- 4
What should be commented on when evaluating an experimental design?
Model answer
Whether the range and interval of the independent variable were suitable, whether enough repeats were taken, whether all other variables were controlled, how precise the instruments were, and how consistent the readings turned out to be.
- 5
What is meant by a suitable range and interval for the independent variable?
Model answer
The range must extend far enough for the whole trend including any plateau to appear, and the interval must be small enough to give enough evenly spaced values, normally at least five, to show the shape of the relationship.
- 6
The readings taken at the highest temperatures in an enzyme investigation are widely scattered. Suggest a cause and an improvement.
Model answer
The reaction is so fast at these temperatures that judging the end point by eye introduces a large timing error, and using a colorimeter linked to a data logger together with more repeats would reduce it.

Every question in Working Scientifically: Practical Skills, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
