Skeletal Muscle: Slow Twitch Fibres and Creatine Phosphate
- 2 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Recall questions on Slow Twitch Fibres and Creatine Phosphate.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why do the muscles of a body stiffen for a time after death?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why do the muscles of a body stiffen for a time after death?
Model answer
Respiration ceases so no ATP is made, and without ATP to bind to them the myosin heads cannot detach from the actin, leaving the muscles locked in a contracted state.
- 2
Which three structural features distinguish a slow twitch fibre?
Model answer
It has many mitochondria, a rich capillary supply and a large amount of myoglobin in its sarcoplasm.
- 3
Why do slow twitch fibres appear dark red?
Model answer
Because of the high concentration of myoglobin, an oxygen-storing red pigment, and the dense network of capillaries supplying them.
- 4
For what activity are slow twitch fibres adapted?
Model answer
For sustained, low-intensity work such as maintaining posture or long-distance running, because they contract slowly but can keep contracting for long periods without fatiguing.
- 5
Give three features of a fast twitch fibre that suit it to sprinting.
Model answer
It has a larger diameter with more myofibrils so it develops greater force, it stores plenty of glycogen and creatine phosphate, and it has a high concentration of the enzymes of glycolysis for rapid anaerobic ATP production.
- 6
Why do fast twitch fibres fatigue so quickly?
Model answer
They rely largely on anaerobic respiration, which yields little ATP per glucose and produces lactate that accumulates in the fibre.
