- 3 things to know
- All units
Overview
Recall questions on Plotting, Interpreting Graphs and Processing.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does a histogram differ from a bar chart?
When is a scattergram the appropriate way to display results?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
When should a line graph be used and when should a bar chart be used?
Model answer
A line graph is used when both variables are continuous, whereas a bar chart is used when the independent variable is made up of separate categories, and its bars are drawn with gaps between them.
- 2
How does a histogram differ from a bar chart?
Model answer
A histogram displays continuous data that have been grouped into classes and its bars touch, whereas a bar chart displays discrete categories and its bars are separated.
- 3
When is a scattergram the appropriate way to display results?
Model answer
A scattergram is used to look for a correlation between two continuous variables when neither has been deliberately altered by the investigator.
- 4
State four rules for plotting a graph correctly.
Model answer
The independent variable goes on the horizontal axis and the dependent variable on the vertical axis, both axes are labelled with the quantity and its unit, the scales are linear and chosen so that the points fill at least half of each axis, and the points are plotted accurately as small crosses.
- 5
When should a line of best fit be drawn rather than joining the points?
Model answer
A line of best fit is drawn when the data show a clear underlying trend and the scatter is due to random error, because joining point to point implies that every reading is exact.
- 6
Must the origin always be shown on a graph?
Model answer
No, the scale should be chosen so that the plotted points occupy most of the grid, and the origin is included only when it is a genuine data point or when the scale requires it.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Working Scientifically: Practical Skills, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
