Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Why did armed conflict with Mecca begin?

    Model answer

The emigrants had left their property behind in Mecca and the Quraysh remained openly hostile, and permission to fight was given in Medina to those who had been wronged and driven from their homes.

  2. 2

    Describe the battle of Badr.

    Model answer

At Badr in 624 a Muslim force of about three hundred met a Quraysh army of roughly a thousand and won decisively, and Surah 8 was revealed in connection with the battle and its aftermath.

  3. 3

Why was Badr so important to the young community?

    Model answer

Badr was read by the Muslims as God's vindication of their cause, it established Medina as a power the Quraysh had to reckon with, and it gave the community confidence after years of being the weaker party.

  4. 4

Explain what went wrong for the Muslims at Uhud.

    Model answer

At Uhud in 625 a Muslim force of about seven hundred faced some three thousand Meccans and gained the advantage until the archers left their assigned position to gather spoils, allowing the Meccan cavalry to attack from behind; Muhammad was wounded and his uncle Hamza was killed.

  5. 5

Describe the battle of the Trench.

    Model answer

In 627 a confederacy of about ten thousand besieged Medina, and on the advice of Salman al-Farisi the Muslims dug a trench across the exposed approach to the city; the siege failed after several weeks and the Meccan offensive against Medina was effectively over.

  6. 6

What happened between Muhammad and the Jewish tribes of Medina?

    Model answer

Two of the Jewish tribes of Medina were expelled after breaches of the city's agreement, and after the siege of the Trench the Banu Qurayzah were judged for siding with the besiegers by the arbitrator both sides had accepted, Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, whose sentence was that the men be killed and the women and children enslaved.
