Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the earliest datable evidence for Christianity in Ireland?
Model answer
The Chronicle of Prosper of Aquitaine records under the year 431 that Palladius was ordained by Pope Celestine and sent as first bishop to the Irish who believe in Christ. The entry is contemporary and comes from outside Ireland.
- 2
Why is the wording of Prosper's entry so important?
Model answer
Prosper describes Palladius as sent to the Irish already believing in Christ. Christians therefore existed in Ireland before any recorded mission, and Palladius was sent to organise a community rather than to create one.
- 3
By what routes is Christianity likely to have reached Ireland?
Model answer
Trade along the western seaways with Britain, Gaul and further south brought merchants and their beliefs, and Irish raiding carried British Christians into Ireland as slaves. Irish settlements in western Britain and returning travellers moved people in both directions.
- 4
What linguistic evidence points to early Christian contact?
Model answer
Irish borrowed a group of church words from British Latin at an early stage, including terms for Easter, for a priest and for a church. The forms of the loanwords indicate that they entered the language through spoken British Latin rather than through later book learning.
- 5
What is the significance of place names containing the element domnach?
Model answer
Domnach derives from the Latin dominicum, meaning a church, and belongs to the earliest layer of Christian borrowing. Scholars have argued that such names mark very early foundations, although the dating of individual sites is disputed.
- 6
Which saints does later tradition place in Ireland before Patrick?
Model answer
Later Munster tradition names Ailbe of Emly, Declan of Ardmore, Ciarán of Saigir and Ibar as bishops working before Patrick. Their surviving Lives are much later, and historians treat the claim partly as southern churches asserting an origin independent of Armagh.
