Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does Moses use the attribute formula in Numbers 14:1-25?
Model answer
After the people refuse to enter the land and God threatens to destroy them, Moses quotes back the words that the LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression. Moses turns God's own self-description into the ground of his intercession.
- 2
How is Moses' prayer in Numbers 14 answered?
Model answer
God says that he forgives as Moses has asked, but declares that none of the generation who saw the signs and tested him will see the land. Forgiveness is granted without cancelling the consequence.
- 3
How is the compassion formula used in Psalm 86?
Model answer
The psalmist prays as one who is poor and needy and appeals to God as good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call on him. Later in the psalm the full formula is quoted as the reason God should turn and be gracious.
- 4
What does Psalm 103 add to the compassion tradition?
Model answer
Psalm 103 quotes the formula and then draws out its consequences, saying that God does not deal with us according to our sins and removes our transgressions as far as the east is from the west. God's compassion is compared to that of a father for his children, because God knows that we are dust.
- 5
How does Psalm 145:9 extend the scope of divine compassion?
Model answer
Psalm 145 quotes the formula and then declares that the LORD is good to all and that his compassion is over all that he has made. The mercy confessed by Israel is therefore extended to the whole creation.
- 6
How does Joel 2:12-14 use the formula?
Model answer
Joel calls the people to return with fasting, weeping and mourning, and to rend their hearts and not their clothing, because God is gracious and merciful and relents from punishing. The formula is used to make repentance worth attempting.
