Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Over what period was the Qur'an revealed?

    Model answer

The Qur'an was revealed over about twenty-three years, roughly thirteen in Mecca and ten in Medina.

  2. 2

Why do Muslims say the Qur'an was revealed piecemeal rather than all at once?

    Model answer

The revelation came in portions so that it could answer the community's situations as they arose, strengthen the Prophet's heart under pressure, and be learned, memorised and put into practice gradually.

  3. 3

    What is the Preserved Tablet?

    Model answer

Surah 85 speaks of a glorious Qur'an on a preserved tablet, and Muslims understand this to mean that the Qur'an exists eternally with God and was sent down from that heavenly original.

  4. 4

How was the revelation recorded in Muhammad's lifetime?

    Model answer

Each passage was memorised by the companions and written down by scribes on whatever came to hand, including parchment, palm stalks, flat stones and the shoulder blades of animals.

  5. 5

Who was the chief scribe of the revelation?

    Model answer

Zayd ibn Thabit was the best known of the scribes and later led the work of collecting the text.

  6. 6

Describe the annual review of the Qur'an.

    Model answer

The tradition records that each Ramadan Jibril and the Prophet went through all that had so far been revealed, and that in the final year they did so twice.
