Themes in Selected Letters of St Paul
Living the Christian life and the armour of God (Ephesians 4:1–6:18)
- 3 things to know
- A2
Overview
Household code and strongest defence of the continuing moral authority of Paul's letters.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does Ephesians 5:1–14 use the image of light and darkness?
What is a household code, and where does one appear in Ephesians?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does the appeal of Ephesians 4:1 connect the two halves of the letter?
Model answer
The writer urges the readers to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which they have been called. Everything already said about God's action becomes the reason for the conduct that follows.
- 2
List the sevenfold basis of unity in Ephesians 4:4–6.
Model answer
The writer names one body, one Spirit, one hope of your calling, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of all. Unity is therefore presented as a fact to be preserved rather than an achievement to be produced.
- 3
What ministries are given to the church in Ephesians 4:11, and for what purpose?
Model answer
Christ gave apostles, prophets, evangelists, and pastors and teachers. Their purpose is to equip the saints for the work of ministry and to build up the body of Christ, so leadership exists to enable the whole membership rather than to replace it.
- 4
What goal of Christian growth is set out in Ephesians 4:13–16?
Model answer
The goal is that all attain to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature adulthood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ. Believers are then no longer children tossed about by every wind of doctrine, but speaking the truth in love grow up in every way into Christ, who is the head.
- 5
What contrast is drawn in Ephesians 4:17–24?
Model answer
The readers are told no longer to walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds and darkened in understanding. They are to put off the old self, be renewed in the spirit of their minds, and put on the new self created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
- 6
Give four specific instructions from Ephesians 4:25–32.
Model answer
The writer tells the readers to put away falsehood and speak the truth with their neighbour, to be angry without sinning and not let the sun go down on their anger, to give up stealing and work honestly so as to have something to share, and to let no corrupting talk come out of their mouths. The section closes by telling them to be kind and tender-hearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave them.
