Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How was Solomon's kingdom organised administratively?
Model answer
Solomon appointed senior officials over the army, the palace, the priesthood, the secretariat and the forced labour. The country was divided into twelve districts, each under an officer responsible for provisioning the court for one month of the year.
- 2
Why was the district system resented?
Model answer
The districts cut across older tribal boundaries and existed to feed the court in Jerusalem. Northern communities were therefore taxed to support a southern capital.
- 3
What was the mas in Solomon's kingdom?
Model answer
The mas was the levy of forced labour. Solomon raised a levy out of Israel to work in Lebanon in monthly relays, alongside large numbers of burden-bearers and stonecutters.
- 4
How did international alliances contribute to the division of the kingdom?
Model answer
Marriage alliances brought foreign wives and their cults into Jerusalem. 1 Kings presents Solomon's building of shrines for their gods as the reason God announced that the kingdom would be torn from his son.
- 5
What sign did Ahijah the Shilonite give to Jeroboam?
Model answer
Ahijah tore his new garment into twelve pieces and gave ten of them to Jeroboam. The act signified that ten tribes would be taken from the house of Solomon.
- 6
What did the assembly at Shechem ask of Rehoboam?
Model answer
The assembly asked Rehoboam to lighten the hard service and the heavy yoke his father had laid on them. In return they promised to serve him.
