  1. 1

What is Ignatius' central appeal in the matter of church unity?

    Model answer

Ignatius urges each church to do nothing without its bishop and to be subject to the bishop, the presbyters and the deacons. Ignatius argues that a church acting in unison is like a choir singing one melody, so that its prayer is heard as one voice.

  2. 2

How does Ignatius describe the three orders of ministry?

    Model answer

Ignatius tells the Magnesians and Trallians to respect the bishop as a type of God the Father, the presbyters as the council of the apostles, and the deacons as entrusted with the ministry of Jesus Christ. The threefold pattern is presented as already established rather than as a novelty.

  3. 3

What does Ignatius say about the bishop and the catholic church?

    Model answer

Ignatius writes to the Smyrnaeans that wherever the bishop appears the congregation should be, just as wherever Jesus Christ is there is the catholic church. The phrase is the earliest recorded use of the term catholic church.

  4. 4

What is Docetism, and why did Ignatius attack it?

    Model answer

Docetism is the teaching that Christ only appeared to have a physical body and only seemed to suffer. Ignatius attacked it because it emptied the incarnation, the passion and the resurrection of reality and, in his view, made the martyr's death pointless.

  5. 5

How does Ignatius state the reality of Christ's life against the Docetists?

    Model answer

Ignatius insists that Jesus Christ was truly born of the line of David and of Mary, truly ate and drank, was truly persecuted under Pontius Pilate, truly crucified and truly raised. The repeated word truly is his answer to those who said that Christ only seemed to do these things.

  6. 6

What argument from his own situation does Ignatius use against the Docetists?

    Model answer

Ignatius asks why, if Christ suffered only in appearance, he himself is in chains and why he should fight the beasts. He argues that if the Docetists are right, then he is dying for nothing.
